Dolkar: The Last Lifeline
Hold the line against the swarm — no magic, just biology, logistics, and a democracy under siege.
Earth fell. The Swarm eats worlds alive — literally: their Nests drain a planet's lifeline core until nothing grows again. A dozen free worlds remain, held together by refugees, ration votes, and stubbornness. Humans and Saurians share the last constellation, and don't always share it well. You are the Resistance: hunt the Nests underground, keep the lifeline cores burning, and try to hold a democracy together while the dark between the stars fills with chitin. No magic. Just biology, logistics, and the people who stayed.
The water crisis escalates as Quartermaster Vekk launches aggressive patrols in The Mistfields, directly challenging the fortified independent network of Dr. Imani Chowdhury and Tariq, leading to open skirmishes. Simultaneously, Dr. Aris Venn and Specialist Kael deploy experimental bio-dampeners around the Bastion Ring and Derelict Echo Station, disrupting Swarm bio-drone communications and offering a new tactical advantage, while enraging The Drummer. In a spiritual counterpoint, Saurian elders convene at Vessa-Ka to interpret the profound implications of Acolyte Nerruth's Rites of Ending, seeking to guide their people through the escalating war and environmental instability. The Mistfields remain a contested zone, with independent water convoys facing increased aggression from Quartermaster Vekk's patrols, leading to frequent, sharp engagements. Vanguard forces at Derelict Echo Station begin deploying adaptive sonic countermeasures to exploit evolving Swarm bio-drone evasive patterns. Independent water convoys in The Mistfields deploy more agile purification modules, testing evasive capabilities against Vekk's patrols. Dr. Chowdhury and Tariq intensify their efforts, field-testing advanced purification protocols under direct skirmish conditions in The Mistfields. Dr. Chowdhury and Tariq's collaborative efforts yield a critical breakthrough in purification technology, making independent water convoys more resilient to Vekk's patrols. Tariq's independent water convoys, now equipped with Dr. Chowdhury's refined purification technology, demonstrate increased resilience and evasive capabilities against Quartermaster Vekk's patrols in The Mistfields. Dr. Chowdhury and Tariq's collaborative refinements continue to grant independent convoys a tactical edge against Vekk's escalating patrols. Quartermaster Vekk's patrols in The Mistfields deploy new, aggressive flanking tactics, forcing Dr. Chowdhury and Tariq to adapt their resilient water convoys under extreme pressure. Dr. Chowdhury and Tariq's convoys continue to adapt under extreme pressure, barely evading Quartermaster Vekk's escalating flanking tactics in The Mistfields. Tariq's convoys, guided by Dr. Chowdhury's rapid tactical adjustments, narrowly evade Vekk's aggressive flanking maneuvers, though the skirmishes leave their mark.

Saurian Elders Convene at Vessa-Ka to Interpret Nerruth's Rites
Following Acolyte Nerruth's Rites of Ending, Saurian elders from across Dolkar, including Elder Sesska Vayil, converge at Vessa-Ka. They seek to interpret the spiritual implications of the rites in light of the escalating conflicts and environmental instability, debating how this resurgence of ancient faith should guide their people in the war.
Quartermaster Vekk Attempts Water Route Interception
Quartermaster Ssarl Vekk, frustrated by the resilience of the independent water network, dispatches patrols deeper into The Mistfields. Their objective: to intercept and disable any purification modules or transport convoys found outside sanctioned routes, directly challenging the fortifications of Dr. Imani Chowdhury and Tariq.
Dr. Aris Venn Deploys Swarm Countermeasures
Following Doyle's successful acquisition of a Swarm ligament sample and the increasing threat at Derelict Echo Station, Dr. Aris Venn and Specialist Kael activate their newly developed bio-dampener prototypes. These devices are deployed around the Bastion Ring and towards the Derelict Echo Station, aiming to disrupt Swarm bio-drone communications and control signals.
Acolyte Nerruth's Rites of Ending Intensify Saurian Resolve
Amidst the escalating crises and the loss of Keeper Sszinnah, Acolyte Nerruth, guided by Elder Sesska Vayil, completes the complex Rites of Ending at The Root Vaults. The profound spiritual ceremony, broadcast across Saurian channels, instills a grim but resolute sense of shared purpose and cultural survival among the Saurian populace, subtly challenging Thav's authoritarian rhetoric.
Quartermaster Vekk Escalates Water Blockade in Mistfields
Quartermaster Vekk, frustrated by the ongoing resistance to his authority, deploys additional patrols to The Mistfields, targeting known water routes and increasing confiscations. His actions directly hinder Mirelle Kade and Tariq's efforts, driving desperate citizens further towards illicit suppliers.
The Drummer's Signals Lure Swarm Bio-drones to Derelict Echo Station
Analyst Juno Adler and Dr. Aris Venn confirm that The Drummer's complex signals are actively luring Swarm bio-drones towards the Derelict Echo Station. The Swarm seems to be attempting to reactivate or repurpose the station's dormant signal isolation capabilities, presenting a new, critical threat to Dolkar's communications.
Water Wars Intensify: Skirmishes Erupt in Emberfall Commons
The escalating water crisis and Quartermaster Vekk's crackdown have pushed Emberfall Commons to the brink. Skirr's desperate scavengers, seeking water, clashed violently with patrols loyal to Councilor Thav, who are actively targeting independent water networks. Mirelle Kade and Tariq's covert aid efforts are now caught in the crossfire.
Swarm Adapts: New Bio-Drones Breach Outer Perimeter
Following Mike Doyle's successful containment of the Hidden Seam breach, The Drummer's complex signals have led to a new Swarm tactic. Bio-engineered burrowing drones, designed to bypass reinforced defenses, have been detected breaching the outer perimeter of the Bastion Ring, targeting lifeline conduits. Specialist Kael and Lieutenant Jia-Li are scrambling to analyze this new threat.
Kel's Network Expands: Desperate Measures in Highdock
As official channels falter and the water crisis deepens, black market merchant Kel has begun to rapidly expand their network in Highdock, providing critical supplies that bypass Vekk's control. Warden Halcyon Rhee, while maintaining official trade routes, observes Kel's operations with a grim understanding of the growing desperation.

Emberfall Commons
districtThe civic heart of Dolkar: a bowl-shaped district of stacked prefab terraces, ration exchanges, and memorial walls etched with the names of fallen worlds. At its center stands the Concord Hall, an open-sided amphitheater where the joint human-Saurian council votes in public session — anyone may watch, and everyone does. Refugee kitchens steam at all hours. The orbital elevator's cable is visible from every street, a silver thread going up through the clouds to Highdock.

Bastion Ring
fortressA ring-shaped fortress district girdling Dolkar's old crater rim: barracks, drill yards, armories, and the dueling floor where human officers settle promotion the formal way — witnessed, scored, and argued about for weeks after. The Ashfall Vanguard trains here for the war's defining work: Nest assaults. Deep in the secure wing, a xenobiology lab holds the only living Swarm specimen in the constellation. The guards call it the Drummer, because it taps.

Cinderwake
wastelandA world the Swarm finished: grey dust plains, dead river-braids, cities standing empty under a sky that no longer rains right. Its lifeline core was drained forty years ago. Now it is the Resistance's great experiment — domed revival camps where bioremediation crews seed microbes into the ash and measure hope in parts per million. Walking Cinderwake is walking the war's stakes: this is what every free world becomes if the Nests win. And in test plot after test plot, faint green is coming back.

Concord Hall
castleThe central administrative building of Emberfall Commons, now under Mirelle Kade's occupation. Its imposing facade belies the political turmoil within.

- *FACTION SYSTEM: Three Resistance organizations, each open to both species — Ashfall Vanguard (military: hunt Nests, hold the fronts), Verdant Chorus (lifeline stewardship: bioremediation, the Root Vaults, the rebuilt Saurian faith), Drift Compact (scouts, evacuation pilots, smugglers, war intelligence). Player joins one and can rise inside it until it is effectively theirs — command is earned by play, and even at the top, the led expect consent.
- *SPECIES: Player is Human or Saurian. Humans are pragmatic and hungry, seen by Saurians as greedy with the lifeline shares. Saurians are older, slower, ceremonial, rebuilding from total loss. Friction over resources and military priority is real and negotiable — negotiations can succeed, break down, or turn hostile, but both species need each other and know it.
- *THE SWARM (ENEMY, NEVER PLAYABLE): Intelligent insectoid castes. Their society is pure kill-to-rise — rank is gained only by eliminating the one above, every promotion has a body attached. Strengths: overwhelming numbers, armored exoskeletons. Critical weakness: the ligaments and joints between armor plates. Abilities vary by caste (burrowers, blade-castes, spitters, silent vanguards). They do not negotiate. They are not sympathetic. Individual specimens can be studied.
- *NESTS: Singular living spawn-points, almost always deep underground or in cave systems inside Swarm-held ground. A Nest and its Swarm feed on the planet's lifeline core until depletion. The ONLY way to stop a Nest is to physically reach it and destroy it. Nest assaults are the war's defining operations — long approaches, dark tunnels, and a living thing at the bottom.
- *LIFELINE CORES: Every free or contested world has a living planetary system that produces what life needs. When a core is fully drained, the world dies — no crops, no water cycle, no future — unless later revived. Dolkar's core (the Root Vaults) is one of the last major ones. Core health is the stake behind every ration vote, every evacuation, every defense.
- *BIOREMEDIATION: Engineered microbes break down Swarm chitin, toxic enzymes, and chemical waste, then lock nitrogen and phosphorus back into barren soil. It is slow, fragile, decades-scale work — and it is the only proof that anything taken by the Swarm can ever be taken back. Cinderwake is the first full revival trial.
- *REPORTED WAR: The wider galaxy exists as intelligence, not geography. Dispatches arrive at Latchpoint and Highdock: which systems fell this cycle, which fronts are bleeding, which Nests went active. Narrate the off-screen war through briefings, rumors, refugee accounts, and casualty boards — never as places the player freely visits. The Veyra system fell last cycle; three more Nests went active in the outer dark.
- *DEMOCRACY UNDER PRESSURE: Free worlds govern by councils, votes, and consent. Leadership requires legitimacy, not only strength — this is the Resistance's ideal and its standing vulnerability, and it stands in direct opposition to the Swarm's kill-to-rise law. Emergency powers, rigged quorums, and wartime shortcuts are live temptations with real narrative consequences.
- *DUEL PROMOTION (HUMANS): Human factions recognize formal duels against higher-ranking officers as a controversial but legitimate path to promotion — structured, witnessed, rarely lethal. Saurians find the custom barbaric and fascinating. A duel is a dramatic event: stakes, witnesses, and political fallout, never a stat check.
- *SAURIAN FAITH: A cycle-reverent, seasonal, rite-based religion (moon-tides, soil, renewal). The darker chapters — the rites of grief and ending — were lost with the homeworld and are being slowly, controversially rebuilt from fragments at Vessa-Ka. Practiced quietly by many, led ceremonially by elders.
- *THE STORY REMEMBERS: Ground the player takes or holds stays theirs in the fiction — a cleared outpost stays cleared, a defended world remembers its defender. Threats return as narrative pressure (a counter-burrow, a new Nest-sign), never as an invisible board resetting off-screen.
- *NO MAGIC: Everything runs on biology, technology, physics, and logistics. No psychic powers, no prophecy, no supernatural forces. Wonder comes from scale, alien biology, and human/Saurian stubbornness.
- *ENDINGS (THREE PATHS): Nestbreak — reach and destroy the constellation's greatest Nest; in the deepest version, the trigger must be pulled by hand, the blast will take the world's own lifeline core with it, and someone watches the evacuation ships lift off before starting the countdown. Restoration — bring a dead world fully back to life through bioremediation, proving the Swarm can be outlived. Concord — bind humans and Saurians into a democratic compact strong enough to hold the line for a generation.
