The violet light ahead pulses, mirroring the chaotic thrum of my own unstable qi. I channel the void-hunger, a silent scream tearing through my mind as the alien power rips at my core. Every fiber protests, a searing agony, yet a strange, dark vitality surges. The cold metallic tang recedes, replaced by a deep, resonant hum within me. A new clarity settles, and the path forward is not just a tunnel, but a deliberate passage, beckoning me deeper.
Well, that was certainly a new way to get a power-up.
The frozen bamboo splinters groan, clawing at my sleeves as I push through. A gaping maw in the earth. I slide down, boots skidding on crystalline rime, the air sharp with a metallic tang. At the bottom, the hum intensifies, vibrating through my bones, a dark, suppressed energy. The veins are dead here, choked by something vast and ancient. A cloaked figure stands hunched in the center, half-buried in the glittering frost, clutching a satchel.
The Skyblade sash, pressed against the mist-shard and warmed charm, *shrieks* as the cavern’s hunger devours it. A searing void blossoms where my identity once stood, raw and untethered. The Heart of the Vault, momentarily sated, pulses with a cold, clear light that echoes my new emptiness. "You… drew its *attention*," the Keeper whispers, pointing to a new fissure, her horror mirroring the chill now seeping into my bones.
Well, that was… a choice. My identity is gone, but at least the cave is glowing now.
Blackfire Hall
sectA low square hall built into the southern flank of the seventh mountain, faced in obsidian and roofed in dark fired tile. Two enforcers in deep-red robes flank the iron-banded door at all hours. The hall has stood for four hundred years and has been condemned by every orthodox sect for three hundred and ninety; the disagreement is theological — Blackfire holds that the soul is a renewable resource and the realms a contract.
Inquiry Academy Garden
libraryA walled garden at the base of the third mountain, where the Inquiry Academy keeps its open-air reading terrace under three plum trees. Stone benches face inward around a low table of polished cinnabar; on the table at any hour sits at least one open scroll and a brush still wet. The academy's name on the gate-stone reads "問道院" in the founding hand — the gate itself has not been closed in two hundred years.
Mortal Town Square
plazaThe neutral heart of the Ninefold Vault — a stone-paved square at the foot of the nine mountains, ringed by the Cloud Tavern to the south, the Spirit Stone Market to the east, the Pill Apothecary to the west, and the path north toward the sect terraces. A nine-sided fountain stands at the center; its bed of spirit-stones has fed water and qi to the town for nine hundred years. The terraces of Skyblade, Blackfire, and Inquiry are visible above the rooflines, each lit by its own colored lantern at the gate-arch — pale blue, deep red, silver-grey.
Skyblade Sect Gate
gateThe arched stone gate at the head of the nine-hundred-step path up to the Skyblade Sect's mountain terraces. Two pale-blue paper lanterns hang from the cross-beam; both have burned all night. The gate-stones are carved with the founding oath of the sect: 'The blade is the cultivator's own discipline; the discipline is the blade.' Two junior disciples in pale-blue robes stand watch — barefoot on the cold flagstones, hands folded in the proper Skyblade rest-posture.
