The Ninefold Ascent
An unranked disciple among nine sects — become the Supreme Master, or fall to the demonic path.
Etched into this world
Moments players wrote that became part of this world's canon
My qi floods the blighted relic, and a shock of cold fire surges back, electrifying like plunging a numb limb into icy water. The artifact screams in my grasp, a resonant thrum vibrating through the very earth as the Blackfire Forge itself seems to hold its breath. A searing knot blooms in my dantians, reshaping me from the inside out, and the world snaps into hyper-focus. Every spark, every distant tremor, every acrid scent of soul-coal smoke becomes an acute, undeniable truth, anchoring a new, profound stability deep within my core.
The Hidden Passage spits me out, its resonant hum dissolving into a profound silence. Only eleven chimes, not thirteen, hang in the heavy air, a strange calm. Master Cao Linshu’s quarters feel both familiar and alien, dust motes dancing in the dim light. My mind, however, is already fixed: the keeper of living scrolls. My gaze snaps to the towering shelves, the very breath of this archive.
I ask the scrolls for assistance
I pivot to retrace my steps, but the very stone underfoot seems to clench, a low rumble vibrating through my boots. A melancholic chime, two beats short, echoes from distant spires, a stark reminder of the world’s fading breath. The passage itself now hums, a nascent energy coalescing around me, and from a previously unseen niche, an ethereal glow spills forth. There, carved into the rock, is a delicate Sunken Glades herb, beneath it script that whispers of a "keeper of living scrolls."
Gather the herb and give thanks.
Blackfire Hall
sectA low square hall built into the southern flank of the seventh mountain, faced in obsidian and roofed in dark fired tile. Two enforcers in deep-red robes flank the iron-banded door at all hours. The hall has stood for four hundred years and has been condemned by every orthodox sect for three hundred and ninety; the disagreement is theological — Blackfire holds that the soul is a renewable resource and the realms a contract.
Inquiry Academy Garden
ruinsA walled garden at the base of the third mountain, where the Inquiry Academy maintains its open-air reading terrace beneath three plum trees. Stone benches face inward around a low table of polished cinnabar; at any hour, one can find upon it at least one open scroll and a brush, still wet. The academy's name, "Wèndàoyuàn," is carved into the gate-stone in the founding hand — the gate itself has not been closed in two hundred years.
Mortal Town Square
ruinsThe neutral heart of the Ninefold Vault — a stone-paved square at the foot of the nine mountains, ringed by the Cloud Tavern to the south, the Spirit Stone Market to the east, the Pill Apothecary to the west, and the path north toward the sect terraces. A nine-sided fountain stands at the center; its bed of spirit-stones has fed water and qi to the town for nine hundred years. The terraces of Skyblade, Blackfire, and Inquiry are visible above the rooflines, each lit by its own colored lantern at the gate-arch — pale blue, deep red, silver-grey.
Skyblade Sect Gate
gateThe arched stone gate at the head of the nine-hundred-step path up to the Skyblade Sect's mountain terraces. Two pale-blue paper lanterns hang from the cross-beam; both have burned all night. The gate-stones are carved with the founding oath of the sect: 'The blade is the cultivator's own discipline; the discipline is the blade.' Two junior disciples in pale-blue robes stand watch — barefoot on the cold flagstones, hands folded in the proper Skyblade rest-posture.
