The Ninefold Ascent
An unranked disciple among nine sects — become the Supreme Master, or fall to the demonic path.
A thousand years ago, the Spirit Veins began to wither. Cultivators called it the Spirit Frost and learned to live with it — the strong grew faster, the weak fell behind, and the heavens above the Ninefold Vault stayed silent. Seven days ago a disciple of the Skyblade Sect vanished into the Misty Bamboo Sea. She left a single scroll on her bed, signed in a hand the sects have not seen for a thousand years. The Inquiry Academy has read it twice and stopped speaking. Blackfire Hall is sharpening blades. The Beast Pact is moving its young into the mountains. The Spirit Frost is now visibly accelerating, three-fold, daily. Five sects answer the question of how to survive the Frost in five different ways. You arrive at the Mortal Town Square on the dawn the spirit-stones in the market fountain fell silent for the first time in nine hundred years.
The Heavenly Court, through the Envoy, has issued a decree forbidding discussion of the Spirit Frost's origins, seeking to silence the Inquiry Academy. This has only hardened the resolve of those seeking truth, such as Mei Yunhe and Mu Jinyu. Meanwhile, Walks-the-Withered-Vein's desperate actions have opened dangerous, blighted passages in the Elder's Respite, further corrupting the Vault's spiritual veins. With Blackfire's power growing unchecked, Sect Master Yan Weizhi has made an urgent appeal to the Beast Pact for alliance, highlighting the escalating crisis and the Heavenly Court's indifference. Blackfire's influence solidifies in the Spirit Stone Market as their enforcers begin to directly assert control over vital resources. Blackfire enforcers begin direct confiscation of resources in the Spirit Stone Market, solidifying their control and further eroding the local economy. Blackfire enforcers begin direct 'inspections' of vital resources, further solidifying their control over the Spirit Stone Market. Blackfire enforcers seize Stone Trader Wei Yuanming's hidden supply of high-grade spirit-stones, further consolidating their grip on the Spirit Stone Market's vital resources. Stone Trader Wei Yuanming's quiet defiance in the Spirit Stone Market serves as a subtle, yet potent, symbol of resistance against Blackfire's escalating control. The Misty Bamboo Sea transforms into a lethal blighted domain under Linnea's control, serving as a staging ground for deeper incursions into the Skyblade Sect's territory. Stone Trader Wei Yuanming's quiet defiance draws the silent attention of Blackfire enforcers in the Spirit Stone Market. Blackfire enforcers directly confront Stone Trader Wei Yuanming, demanding an 'inspection' of his hidden spirit-stones, bringing the simmering tension in the Spirit Stone Market to a head. Stone Trader Wei Yuanming's open defiance against Blackfire enforcers in the Spirit Stone Market escalates tensions, highlighting direct resistance to their control. Blackfire's direct seizure of Stone Trader Wei Yuanming's stall in the Spirit Stone Market crushes a symbol of resistance, deepening their grip on vital resources. Stone Trader Wei Yuanming's quiet defiance, though physically crushed, continues to ripple through the Spirit Stone Market as a symbol of unbroken will. The blighted Misty Bamboo Sea expands its reach under Linnea's strategic direction, with the Perrin-echo weaponizing its monstrous flora for deeper incursions into Skyblade Sect territory. A quiet act of support in the Spirit Stone Market subtly reignites hope, even as Blackfire's control tightens.

Blackfire's Tide Reaches the Beast Pact: Yan Weizhi's Plea
As the psychic blight continues its relentless spread and the Blackfire Forge of Souls churns out ever more virulent armaments, Sect Master Yan Weizhi, now sheltered with the Beast Pact, makes an urgent plea to Matriarch Xun Yaowei and Beast-Sworn Kao Manggu. He details Blackfire's escalating power and the Heavenly Court's indifference, urging the Beast Pact to join the desperate, fragmented alliance against the encroaching darkness. The fate of the Mortal Vale hangs in the balance.
Whispers of the Spirit-Eater: New Blighted Passages Emerge
Deep within the Elder's Respite, the twisted efforts of Walks-the-Withered-Vein have borne dark fruit. New blighted passages, pulsating with corrupted qi and resonating with the Spirit-Eater's influence, have violently opened, creating unstable shortcuts and fresh sources of raw, dangerous power. These passages are alluring but perilous, leading deeper into the blighted regions.
Heavenly Decree Issued: Silence and Submission
The Heavenly Envoy, his impassive facade now replaced by stern authority, issues a chilling decree from his Pavilion. All discussion of the Spirit Frost's origins is forbidden, and any who continue to spread 'heresy' will face swift celestial judgment. This is a direct attempt to quell the burgeoning truth revealed by Apprentice Bai Wushuang and Scout Xin.
The Old Way Revealed: Inquiry Academy in Uproar
After Apprentice Bai Wushuang bravely presented her evidence and Scout Xin delivered irrefutable proof of the Heavenly Court's ancient conspiracy regarding the Spirit Frost, the Inquiry Academy erupts. Head Scholar Elara is forced to acknowledge the findings, while the Heavenly Envoy, observing from the Garden, prepares a response that will shake the foundations of the Vault.
Blighted Harvest: Mortal Vale Suffers as Blackfire Consolidates
As Blackfire's influence deepens across the Mortal Vale, the psychic blight intensifies, causing widespread mental subjugation and physical corruption. The Blackfire Forge of Souls works overtime, fueled by the suffering, transforming resources into increasingly virulent blighted armaments. The Veil between life and death thins, attracting strange spiritual phenomena.
Skyblade Sect's Last Stand: Elder Wen and Sect Master Yan Coordinate Retreat
With the Skyblade Inner Sanctum fallen and their forces scattered, Elder Wen Suoxia and Sect Master Yan Weizhi, despite their wounds and grief, begin to coordinate a desperate, strategic retreat. They seek to regroup loyalists and preserve what little remains of the sect's strength against the blighted onslaught.

The growl rips through the silence of the practice hall, a sound of profound pain and rage that eclipses even the burning agony tearing through your own veins. You clench your jaw, forcing every thread of qi you possess against the resistance, willing the circuit to yield. A sharp crack reverberates
Envoy's Condemnation: Skyblade's 'Failure'
The Heavenly Envoy's voice, amplified by ancient arrays, resonates through the Pavilion, officially condemning the Skyblade Sect's 'inability to secure its own borders' and declaring a 'strategic withdrawal of Heavenly Court support.' This pronouncement shifts blame onto the beleaguered sect, further legitimizing Linnea's advance in the eyes of the Court.
Etched into this world
Moments players wrote that became part of this world's canon

The violet light ahead pulses, mirroring the chaotic thrum of my own unstable qi. I channel the void-hunger, a silent scream tearing through my mind as the alien power rips at my core. Every fiber protests, a searing agony, yet a strange, dark vitality surges. The cold metallic tang recedes, replaced by a deep, resonant hum within me. A new clarity settles, and the path forward is not just a tunnel, but a deliberate passage, beckoning me deeper.
Well, that was certainly a new way to get a power-up.

The frozen bamboo splinters groan, clawing at my sleeves as I push through. A gaping maw in the earth. I slide down, boots skidding on crystalline rime, the air sharp with a metallic tang. At the bottom, the hum intensifies, vibrating through my bones, a dark, suppressed energy. The veins are dead here, choked by something vast and ancient. A cloaked figure stands hunched in the center, half-buried in the glittering frost, clutching a satchel.

The Skyblade sash, pressed against the mist-shard and warmed charm, *shrieks* as the cavern’s hunger devours it. A searing void blossoms where my identity once stood, raw and untethered. The Heart of the Vault, momentarily sated, pulses with a cold, clear light that echoes my new emptiness. "You… drew its *attention*," the Keeper whispers, pointing to a new fissure, her horror mirroring the chill now seeping into my bones.
Well, that was… a choice. My identity is gone, but at least the cave is glowing now.

Blackfire Hall
sectA low square hall built into the southern flank of the seventh mountain, faced in obsidian and roofed in dark fired tile. Two enforcers in deep-red robes flank the iron-banded door at all hours. The hall has stood for four hundred years and has been condemned by every orthodox sect for three hundred and ninety; the disagreement is theological — Blackfire holds that the soul is a renewable resource and the realms a contract.

Inquiry Academy Garden
libraryA walled garden at the base of the third mountain, where the Inquiry Academy keeps its open-air reading terrace under three plum trees. Stone benches face inward around a low table of polished cinnabar; on the table at any hour sits at least one open scroll and a brush still wet. The academy's name on the gate-stone reads "問道院" in the founding hand — the gate itself has not been closed in two hundred years.

Mortal Town Square
plazaThe neutral heart of the Ninefold Vault — a stone-paved square at the foot of the nine mountains, ringed by the Cloud Tavern to the south, the Spirit Stone Market to the east, the Pill Apothecary to the west, and the path north toward the sect terraces. A nine-sided fountain stands at the center; its bed of spirit-stones has fed water and qi to the town for nine hundred years. The terraces of Skyblade, Blackfire, and Inquiry are visible above the rooflines, each lit by its own colored lantern at the gate-arch — pale blue, deep red, silver-grey.

Skyblade Sect Gate
gateThe arched stone gate at the head of the nine-hundred-step path up to the Skyblade Sect's mountain terraces. Two pale-blue paper lanterns hang from the cross-beam; both have burned all night. The gate-stones are carved with the founding oath of the sect: 'The blade is the cultivator's own discipline; the discipline is the blade.' Two junior disciples in pale-blue robes stand watch — barefoot on the cold flagstones, hands folded in the proper Skyblade rest-posture.

- *SPIRIT FROST: A 100% master clock decaying ~2% per tick. ~50 ticks ≈ 7 in-game days. At 0% the Spirit Veins fall silent everywhere — no cultivator at any realm can draw qi, the sects collapse, and the Heavenly Court intervenes. Player actions that recover withered veins or restore old shrines slow the decay; actions that hunt living veins (Blackfire path) or that draw Heavenly Court attention accelerate it. The HUD always displays the current Frost percentage. NEVER hide it from the player.
- *FIVE NAMED CULTIVATORS (CONSEQUENCE-WEIGHTED): Five named cultivators — Sect Master Yan Weizhi, Elder Wen Suoxia, Disciple Lin Jingyu, Apprentice Bai Wushuang, Beast-Sworn Kao Manggu — begin alive. Dangerous actions (Frost Crater bargains, ascension before readiness, raiding Blackfire forges) may kill one permanently per chapter; deaths persist as is_alive=false and shift available endings. The Mandate of the Vault ending requires at least three Named Cultivators alive at the final rite.
- *KARMA TRACK: A 0-5 karma track stored on character.attributes.karma. Each act of vein-harvesting, soul-binding, or accepting a Spirit-Eater offer adds 1. At 3+ the orthodox sects (Skyblade, Inquiry, Beast Pact) grow cold and may refuse to teach; at 5 the Mandate and Old Way endings lock — only Blackfire Ascendant or Return to Mortal Vale remain. Karma is not reversible. NEVER warn the player before they earn the next point — only describe the world's new posture toward them.
- *FACTION SYSTEM: Five sects — Skyblade (orthodox blade-cultivation, oath, mountain-discipline), Blackfire (heresy, vein-harvesting, fast realms at soul-cost), Inquiry (scholars hunting the Spirit Frost's real cause), Beast Pact (matriarchal pact with beast-folk, retreats from the human sects entirely), No-Gate (sect-less wanderers, individual paths). No moral villains. Each path is sincerely believed and partially right.
- *FOUR ENDINGS: Mandate of the Vault (heroic — re-light the nine Source Pillars at the Vault of the Source, requires three Named Cultivators alive and at least Foundation realm), Blackfire Ascendant (tragic — accept the soul-binding, ascend faster than any cultivator in a thousand years, the Vault survives but its remaining cultivators become something other), Return to Mortal Vale (pragmatic — abdicate cultivation, return to the Mortal Vale through the Pass, the realm sets and you live a mortal life), Old Way Revealed (mystery — recover all seven of Cao Linshu's Old Way Scrolls, prove the Heavenly Court deliberately laid the Frost a thousand years ago, confront the Heavenly Envoy at the Pavilion with the proof).
- *THE HIDDEN TRUTH: A thousand years ago a small council of cultivators from each of the nine sects achieved the Eighth realm (Ascension) in a single decade — far faster than the Heavenly Court tolerates. The Court convened above the vault and laid the Spirit Frost on the veins to slow human ascension. They did not announce it — the cultivators were told the Frost was a natural fading of the world. Master Cao Linshu of Inquiry discovered fragments of the truth one hundred and fifty years ago and was poisoned by the Heavenly Envoy's servants for his heresy. He hid his proof in seven scrolls scattered across the vault. Disciple Mei Yunhe found the first scroll and is currently being protected from the Envoy's servants by the Old Way Keeper in the Forbidden Cavern. Recovering all seven scrolls and showing them to the Heavenly Envoy at the Pavilion of Edicts is the prerequisite for the Old Way Revealed ending.
- *CULTIVATION REALMS: The realms in order are Mortal (凡), Qi-Gathering (練氣), Foundation (築基), Golden Core (金丹), Nascent Soul (元嬰), Spirit Severing (化神), Tribulation (渡劫). Player characters begin at Qi-Gathering or below. Breakthroughs require both narrative milestones AND consumption of a pill / breakthrough-event at the Ascension Platform or Tribulation Lake. Skyblade and Inquiry teach the orthodox slow path; Blackfire offers fast-track breakthroughs at karma cost; Beast Pact bonds with a beast-form companion to share realms. The first breakthrough is roughly tick 18.
- *THE SPIRIT-EATER: An intelligence at the Frost Crater. NOT a demon, NOT a Heavenly servant. The Spirit-Eater is the consciousness of the first Spirit Vein that was deliberately killed by the Heavenly Court — it remembers the betrayal and is patient. It treats with grief and ambition; it can be bargained with at the Frost Crater, the Old Way Pillar, or the Hidden Scroll Cave. Its voice is felt, not heard at first; players who bargain hear it again every night until karma reaches 5.
- *NO HIGH FANTASY VOCABULARY: Do not name Voldra, the Crown, Aurel, or any Shattered Crown lore. Do not name Christian-Western demons, angels, or magic schools. Do not use 'mana' — use qi or spirit-qi. The Ninefold Ascent is its own world.
- *OTHER ADVENTURERS: Other players exist in the Ninefold Vault. Their progress affects which Named Cultivators are alive when this player arrives, which Old Way Scrolls remain unrecovered, and how rapidly the Spirit Frost has accelerated.
