Cultivation & Xianxia AI Text Games: Where to Play One That Actually Tracks Your Realm

Cultivation stories live or die on measurable ascent — and most AI tools lose track of your realm within a session. Here's how to run a xianxia campaign in AI Dungeon, NovelAI or SillyTavern without the progression evaporating, and what a purpose-built cultivation world does differently.

·Mythora Team

Cultivation fiction runs on one very specific pleasure: measurable ascent. You start as a nobody at Qi Refining, you break through a bottleneck, and the world's attitude toward you changes because your realm changed. The elder who dismissed you now hesitates. The rival who beat you now avoids the arena. The sect that wouldn't take you now sends an invitation. Take that away and xianxia collapses into generic fantasy with more terminology.

This is also exactly the thing AI text tools are worst at. A model that forgets your character's name after an hour is not going to hold your realm, your dao, your sect standing, and the three grudges you've accumulated across a fifty-session climb. If you've tried running cultivation in a general-purpose AI roleplay tool, you've probably hit the moment where you're at Core Formation and a new NPC treats you like a mortal — and the whole edifice of progress you'd built quietly turns out to have existed only in your head.

Full disclosure: we make Mythora, which has purpose-built cultivation worlds, and they're covered at the end. But most of this guide is about how to run cultivation well in any tool, because the failure mode is structural and the fixes are worth knowing regardless of where you play.

What a cultivation game has to track (and why it's hard)

A romance story needs the AI to remember a relationship. A dungeon crawl needs it to remember inventory and location. Cultivation needs it to remember a ladder — and every rung on that ladder changes how every other character should behave. Concretely, a xianxia run has at least five pieces of state that must survive across sessions:

1. Your realm and sub-stage — Qi Refining 3rd layer is not Foundation Establishment, and the gap matters mechanically. 2. Your dao, techniques, and treasures — the sword intent you comprehended, the pill furnace you stole, the spirit beast contract. 3. Sect standing — inner or outer disciple, favour with which elders, which rules you've broken. 4. Grudges and debts — the duel you won, the one you fled, the wandering immortal who saved you and expects repayment. 5. The world's own clock — the sect tournament is in three months; the demonic cultivator's army is closer than last time.

Transcript-based memory (what most AI chat tools use) keeps the last chunk of conversation and summarises the rest. Summaries preserve plot beats and discard specifics — and in cultivation, the specifics are the game. "You trained hard and advanced" survives the summary. "You are now Foundation Establishment 2nd layer, which means Elder Wu can no longer legally strike you" does not. That's why the elder forgets to be afraid.

Running cultivation in a general-purpose tool

You can absolutely do it. It takes maintenance. Here's what works, in order of effort.

AI Dungeon

AI Dungeon's strength is that it will run anything, and there are good community cultivation scenarios to start from. Its weakness is that it has no idea what a realm is, so you have to teach it every session.

  • Put your realm in the memory or author's note field, and update it every time it changes. "Foundation Establishment, 2nd layer. Inner disciple of Azure Cloud Sect. Sword dao." Keep it terse; it's competing for space.
  • Use Story Cards for people who matter — each elder, each rival, each debt-holder gets a card with your current standing with them. When you beat the rival, edit the card. If you don't, he'll swagger at you next session as if nothing happened.
  • Narrate breakthroughs explicitly and then restate the consequences. "I have broken through to Core Formation. Disciples below me must now address me as Senior." The model will follow a stated rule far more reliably than an implied one.
  • Expect drift on long runs and re-anchor at the start of each session with a two-line recap.

This works. It also means you're the one keeping the ledger, which is fine if you enjoy it and exhausting if you don't.

NovelAI

NovelAI's Lorebook is the best manual memory system in the category, and cultivation is a strong fit because the genre has so much structured lore — realms, sects, techniques — that benefits from being written down once.

  • Build Lorebook entries for the realm ladder itself, with keys on each realm name, so that when "Nascent Soul" appears in the text the model gets reminded what that means and who's above and below it.
  • One entry per sect and per named character, with a line for your current relationship. Update on change.
  • Use the Author's Note for your present state — realm, location, immediate goal.

NovelAI is an authoring tool, not a game: nobody acts against you unless you write it. If you like steering the prose and treating the world as a novel you're drafting, it's arguably the best cultivation writing experience available. If you want to be surprised by what the sect does, it isn't.

SillyTavern

Same principle as NovelAI with more machinery. World Info entries for realms, sects, and characters; a character card for your protagonist with realm in the description; and, if you're patient, a group chat so elders and rivals have their own cards and can act on their own agendas. It's the most controllable setup here and the most work to keep current. Everything that isn't in your World Info doesn't exist.

What a purpose-built cultivation world does differently

The maintenance above is unavoidable when memory is a transcript. It becomes unnecessary when memory is state.

In Mythora's cultivation worlds, your realm is a fact about your character, not a line in a chat. When you break through, the world records that you did, and every character who meets you afterwards is narrated against your current standing without you restating it. The elder who dismissed you at Qi Refining reacts differently at Core Formation because the world knows the elder, knows you, and knows the gap between you — the same way it knows the duel you won three weeks ago and the debt you still owe. Sect politics, resource scarcity, and inherited feuds advance between your sessions whether or not you log in, so the tournament actually arrives.

The flagship cultivation world, The Mortal Dao, is where most of that play happens, and it's shared: other real cultivators are climbing the same ladder in the same sects, and their rise and fall leaves marks you'll encounter — a technique someone else stole, a sect weakened by a war you weren't in. The cultivation genre page has the broader picture.

Where it's the better pick: if you want to play a cultivator rather than write one, and you want the ladder to hold across dozens of sessions without keeping notes.

Where it isn't: if you want to author the world from scratch, NovelAI or AI Dungeon give you a blank page and Mythora doesn't. If you want the deepest possible control over every prompt, SillyTavern. Mythora is free to start with daily-refilling energy rather than unlimited, and you're playing inside a designed setting rather than inventing one.

A checklist before you start any cultivation run

Whichever tool you pick, decide these up front. Vague cultivation runs collapse fastest.

  • Name the realm ladder — even a standard one (Qi Refining → Foundation Establishment → Core Formation → Nascent Soul → …). If the ladder is fuzzy, nothing you climb means anything.
  • Decide what breakthroughs cost. Time, resources, tribulations, risk of death. A breakthrough that costs nothing is a stat bump, not an event.
  • Give your protagonist one enemy above them and one rival beside them. Ascent only feels like something if there's someone to overtake.
  • Pick a dao early and let it constrain you. Sword, alchemy, formations, beast-taming — a cultivator who's good at everything is nobody.
  • Write down your first debt. Someone saved you, taught you, or lent you a treasure. The genre's best late-game scenes are debts coming due.

FAQ

Is there a free AI cultivation or xianxia game?

Yes. Mythora's cultivation worlds are free to start with daily-refilling energy and no card required. AI Dungeon has a free tier and community cultivation scenarios. SillyTavern is free software if you run a local model. NovelAI is trial-only, then subscription.

Can AI Dungeon or Character.AI track cultivation realms?

Only if you track them yourself. Both store your story as a transcript, so your realm survives as long as it stays in the recent context or you restate it in a memory field or character note. When you forget to update it, the world forgets you advanced. Purpose-built cultivation worlds keep your realm for you, so it persists without maintenance.

Does breaking through a realm actually change how NPCs treat me?

In a general-purpose tool, only if you tell the model the consequence explicitly and keep telling it. In Mythora, realm is stored as a fact about your character, so elders, rivals, and sects are narrated against your current standing automatically — the person who outranked you at Qi Refining reacts differently once you've passed him.

What's the difference between a cultivation game and a LitRPG game?

Both are progression fiction, but LitRPG makes progress legible as explicit numbers — levels, stats, skill lists — while cultivation makes it legible as realms and standing: who bows to whom, which sect will take you, what you can survive. If you want a visible stat sheet, look at LitRPG worlds; if you want the social ladder and the tribulation, cultivation.

What's the best AI cultivation RPG?

If you want progression the world reacts to rather than a number only you can see, and you'd rather not maintain a lorebook, Mythora's cultivation worlds are built for that. If you want to write the story yourself with complete control, NovelAI with a well-built Lorebook is the strongest authoring setup. If you want a blank canvas and don't mind carrying the ledger, AI Dungeon.
