Tahtın Gölgesi: Shadow of the Throne
Ottoman Court IntrigueThe Old Lion has not been seen in fourteen months. Sultan Alaeddin Aslanoglu hunts at Edirne, they say, while his Grand Vizier holds the seal, his mother holds the palace, his three sons hold three provinces, and the janissaries hold their empty pay-purses. You are a prince of the blood, a servant of the Gate, a lady of the Old Palace, or a foreigner with a letter you should not have — and in this court nothing is ever forgotten, because every pasha, aga and hatun keeps a defter: a written register of who served them and who wronged them. What another player did to the Grand Vizier last week is waiting for you in his eyes today. Collect leverage. Bind the houses with seals. Watch the Cord.
Where things stand
Tahtın Gölgesi: Shadow of the Throne is played by real people and keeps moving between their sessions. This is the state of it as of the last update — not a fixed setting, and not where it began.
Rukiye Efendi's audacious public assault on Grand Vizier Ferhad Pasha and Mercan Kethuda within the Divan has plunged the capital into further chaos. The Grand Vizier is humiliated and wounded, Mercan Kethuda's alliance is shattered, and Gevher Sultan sees new opportunities. Kirkor Usta remains silent, using the upheaval to strengthen the Bedesten's autonomy. Whispers of diverted silk and the Sultan's ongoing absence are now amplified, fueling dangerous speculation and accelerating the schemes of Prince Korkut and Nevbahar Kadin, further destabilizing the court. The Bedesten formally adopts a defiant new charter, openly challenging imperial trade authority and solidifying its autonomous status under Kirkor Usta's leadership. The Bedesten's new autonomous council convenes for the first time, addressing immediate trade route disputes and solidifying its defiance against imperial authority. The Bedesten's council issues its first decree, openly challenging imperial trade authority by asserting its right to levy tariffs, further solidifying its autonomous status. A court Page meticulously dispatches news of the Bedesten's defiant decree, ensuring the capital's factions are fully apprised of the market's challenge to imperial authority.
Places
- Bedestenmarket
- The domed heart of the covered bazaar — silk, silver, spice, and the jeweler Kirkor Usta's stall where letters are weighed like gold. Neutral ground by long custom: blades stay sheathed and everything has a price.
- Council Dome of Whisperslandmark
- The Council Dome now serves as a symbol of Ferhad Pasha's diminished power, its pronouncements openly challenged, and its authority questioned by the populace and merchant guilds alike.
- Ocak Barracksfortress
- No longer a mere staging ground, the Ocak Barracks is a vacated stronghold, its gates open and its courtyards empty save for the lingering scent of gunpowder and the faint echoes of war cries. The true fight has begun in the streets.
- Old Palacesettlement
- Shadows deepen in the Old Palace as loyalists disappear and households are dismantled. The air is heavy with silent fear, and every servant moves with exaggerated caution, knowing a single misstep could lead to ruin. Gevher Sultan's grip is absolute.
- Manisa Saraysettlement
- The eldest prince's provincial court on the mountain above the town: falcons on their blocks, the spring festival's spice-smoke, a household small enough that every letter is noticed. The heir's seat — and everyone knows what that makes it.
- Konya Lodgetemple
- The Mevlevi lodge and the kadi's court on the plain: reed-flutes, a courtyard where oaths are witnessed, a sheikh who has refused every pasha's gift for twenty years. The one court in Anatolia no house owns.
- Sivas Garrisonfortress
- The beylerbeyi's stone fortress on the eastern road: sipahi cavalry, a treasury that has not been paid either, rumors from the frontier that nobody in Istanbul answers.
- Kutahya Courtfortress
- Prince Yahya's court in the old citadel: drill-yards, tile-kilns, a mess hall where the prince eats with his guard. The janissaries drink to this prince, and the Divan has noticed.
- Eyup Shrinetemple
- The tomb-mosque at the head of the Golden Horn where sultans are girded with the sword and men swear what they cannot swear elsewhere. Plane trees, tombstones like a stone crowd, a sheikh who asks no names.
- Anatolian Roadroad
- The caravan road between the princes' seats: caravanserais, courier-stations, and stretches where letters are read by men who did not write them. Whoever holds the road holds the princes' correspondence.
- Yedikuledungeon
- The Seven Towers — the prison-fortress in the land walls where ambassadors, pashas and princes wait for the Sultan's decision, or the bowstring. Seven towers, one well, no letters out.
- Galatasettlement
- Across the Golden Horn: the Genoese tower, wine-shops, the Venetian bailo's house with its shuttered study, ships from Ragusa and Chios. The one quarter of the city where the Sultan's law thins.
- Trabzon Harborsettlement
- Prince Cihan's court above the Black Sea harbor: a library, a Venetian factor's house, ships that carry more letters than cargo. The youngest prince keeps a door open that the Divan would like shut.
- Uskudar Crossingroad
- The Uskudar Crossing, usually a bustling thoroughfare, is now a nerve-wracking gauntlet for a messenger carrying information that could destabilize the entire empire. Every face is suspect, every shadow a potential spy.
