AI Realm Alternatives (2026): 4 Options Compared
Looking for an AI Realm alternative? Compare Friends & Fables, AI Dungeon, SillyTavern and Mythora by the adventure you want, and where AI Realm wins.
Maybe the daily dice rolls have started to feel like homework. Maybe your table of friends drifted apart and you want something you can pick up alone on the bus. Or you simply want to see what else is out there before you choose a paid plan.
By "AI Realm" we mean airealm.com, the AI game master platform for D&D 5e-inspired adventures. We make Mythora, one of the options below. This guide is organised around the adventure you want next, and it says plainly where AI Realm is still the better fit.
The short version
| You want… | Explore… |
|---|---|
| Classic 5e-style play with character sheets, dice and friends | Stay with AI Realm |
| A 5e-style AI game master with bigger parties and world-building tools | Friends & Fables |
| Many open-ended premises, from fantasy to post-apocalypse | AI Dungeon |
| Full control over characters, setup and where it runs | SillyTavern |
| To step into an existing world and keep levelling up one character | Mythora |
What AI Realm does well
AI Realm describes itself as an AI-powered RPG platform for D&D 5e-inspired adventures. You build a character with race, class, background and abilities, then an AI game master runs the campaign. Its rules are based on the 5e System Reference Document, covering classes, spells, skills and combat.
The tabletop feel is the point. In its player's guide, you can click a stat, skill or weapon on your character sheet to roll animated 3D dice. You can also describe a custom world, including a setting from a favourite book or show, and play with up to three friends depending on your plan.
On cost, the V2 guide lists a Free plan and paid tiers (Bronze, Platinum, Emerald and Obsidian), with higher tiers giving more room for notes and characters. We could not find prices on the official pages, so check inside the app.
If you love rolling a d20 and reading the result out loud, think twice before leaving. Few products recreate that table feeling so directly.
Friends & Fables: the closest cousin
If what you want is still a 5e-style game, just with a different feel, Friends & Fables is the nearest neighbour. Its official site describes an AI game master called Franz, turn-based combat based on D&D 5e rules, world-building tools for maps and lore, and parties of up to six players.
Its pricing page lists a free plan with up to 25 turns per day, and paid plans from $19.95 a month with unlimited standard turns. Friends can join your games for free.
Choose it when a bigger party and a world-builder's toolkit matter most.
AI Dungeon: more open-ended adventures
Some players realise they love the "anything can happen" moments more than the rules. AI Dungeon is built for that. It calls itself a free AI text adventure game, with community-made adventures and the option to build your own scenario. It also has tools for keeping long adventures on track.
Choose it when variety matters more than dice and character sheets.
SillyTavern: build everything yourself
If you enjoyed tweaking AI Realm's game master preferences and custom sheets, and want to go further, SillyTavern gives you full control. It is free, open-source software you install yourself, and you connect it to an AI service of your choice. The official documentation explains what you need before you start.
It suits tinkerers. If you want to press "play" tonight, look elsewhere.
Mythora: a world that is already there
Picture a newly hatched monster at the bottom of a dungeon tower. It is small, weak and hungry, and everything on the next floor wants to eat it. You do not write the tower or the hunters. You arrive, and you decide what to try.
In Mythora, you pick a world, create a character and play by typing what you do or tapping a suggested action. Your progress is saved, so the next visit picks up the same character in the same place. The world is shared with other players, although you follow your own character's path rather than joining a live party.
A favourite moment for many players is naming a technique or a power and seeing the story respond to it. The world still pushes back: a bold move can fail, and the next scene carries the consequences. If you liked watching your AI Realm character grow, that sense of earning the next step is the part to try first.
Good places to start:
- The Hollow Spire: a monster-evolution dungeon climb, if you love LitRPG progression.
- The Mortal Dao: a cultivation story about rising from nothing.
- Vantage Academy: modern awakener academy drama.
- Dead Signal: zombie survival, if your campaigns tend to end in a siege.
Mythora is free to start with action energy that refills, plus optional purchases. It runs in the browser and also has apps for iPhone, iPad and Android.
Where AI Realm is the better fit: if you want 5e rules, a character sheet, real dice rolls, your own custom world, or a session with friends at the same table, AI Realm is built for that and Mythora is not. In Mythora you play in worlds that already exist, on your own character's path, without dice or a 5e sheet.
How to test an alternative in one evening
- Bring one character you already care about, such as your half-elf ranger or your reluctant cleric.
- Play ten actions in the new product without restarting.
- Close it, come back the next day, and see whether the story still knows who you are and what you were doing.
- Check the price only after you know whether you wanted to come back.
That last step is the honest test for any of these games. Our checklist for long-running stories goes into more detail.
FAQ
Is there a free AI Realm alternative?
Several. Friends & Fables has a free plan with a daily turn limit, AI Dungeon describes itself as free, SillyTavern is free software (you may still pay for an AI service), and Mythora is free to start with action energy that refills, plus optional purchases. Check each official site for current terms.
Which alternative is closest to AI Realm?
Friends & Fables, if you want 5e-style rules, combat and a party. Mythora, if what you really enjoy is one character growing stronger in a world you can keep returning to.
Can I bring my AI Realm character with me?
Not directly. Each product stores characters its own way. The easiest move is to bring your character's name, personality and the one goal they care about, then start fresh.
Do any of these remember everything?
No AI story is perfect over a long campaign. Try a short run first, and see our guide on what to do when an AI story forgets.
