Looking for an Everweave alternative? Compare Friends & Fables, Questner, AI Dungeon and Mythora by the adventure you want next, and how each starts free.

Maybe you have levelled a Paladin through more tavern brawls than you can count and want a different kind of road. Maybe your message pack ran out on a cliffhanger. Or maybe you love the idea of an AI dungeon master and simply want to see what else exists before you settle in.

We make Mythora, one of the options below. This guide is organised around the adventure you want next, and it says plainly where Everweave is still the better fit.

What Everweave does well

Everweave describes itself as a fantasy adventure game inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, with the tagline "Play DnD anywhere, anytime." On its official site you will find the pieces a tabletop fan looks for: rolling dice, classes such as Fighter, Paladin, Warlock, Rogue and Cleric, a Game Master that adapts to your choices, and characters and relationships that carry between sessions.

It is also clearly growing. Its news page lists a steady run of 2026 updates: the Cleric class and Dragonborn in June, a raised level cap and new spells in August, an Ability Generation system in September, and the Monk class in October. You can play in the browser or through the iPhone and Android apps.

On cost, the site says you can play for free, and the App Store listing shows optional monthly plans and message packs.

Friends & Fables: bring the party

If the thing you miss most is your actual group, Friends & Fables is the closest match. Its official site describes a D&D-inspired text RPG with an AI Game Master, turn-based combat based on D&D 5e rules, parties of up to six players, and tools for generating maps and images.

Its pricing page lists a free plan with up to 25 turns a day, and paid plans from $19.95 a month. We wrote a longer Friends & Fables comparison if you want more detail.

Choose it when rules and friends at the same table matter most.

Questner: write the campaign yourself

Some Everweave players end up wanting to design the dungeon, not just walk into it. Questner's FAQ says you can create your own campaigns, with worlds, characters, rules and story settings, then share them by link or publish them for others. It is built for solo players and runs in the browser.

The FAQ lists 40 free messages and a 7-day trial, then $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. See our Questner alternatives guide for the wider picture.

AI Dungeon: endless premises

If you are less attached to swords and spells and more curious about trying anything, AI Dungeon describes itself as a free AI text adventure where you can build a custom scenario or jump into community-made adventures. It is less of a structured D&D experience, and that is the point. Our AI Dungeon alternatives guide covers it in more depth.

Mythora: a world that is already there

Picture a newly spawned monster at the bottom of a spire that eats adventurers, with nothing but hunger and one strange idea about how to survive the next floor. You do not draw the map. You arrive, and you decide what to try.

In Mythora, you pick a world, create a character and play by typing what you do or tapping a suggested action. Your progress is saved, so the next visit picks up the same character in the same place. The world is shared with other players, although you follow your own character's path rather than joining a live party.

There are no dice to roll and no character sheet to manage. Instead, you can name a technique or a power and the story responds to it. The world still pushes back: a bold move can fail, and the next scene carries the consequences.

If you enjoy dungeons, start with The Hollow Spire, a monster-evolution LitRPG. For high fantasy with factions and a broken crown sealing a god, try Shattered Crown. Crowns of Atheria leans isekai, and Death Was the Tutorial is darker LitRPG. Browse more in fantasy and LitRPG.

Mythora is free to start with action energy that refills, plus optional purchases. It runs in the browser and has apps for iPhone, iPad and Android. Ordinary players do not build their own worlds; you play in ones that already exist.

Where Everweave is the better fit: if you want D&D-style classes, spells, levels and dice rolls in a solo campaign, Everweave is built around those and Mythora is not. Mythora has no dice and no ruleset to manage; it is closer to stepping into a novel's world than sitting at a tabletop.

How to test an alternative in one evening

  1. Bring one character idea you already care about, such as the disgraced knight or the bard with debts.
  2. Play ten actions without restarting.
  3. Close it, come back the next day, and see whether the story still knows who you are and what you were doing.
  4. Check the price only after you know whether you wanted to come back.

FAQ

Is there a free Everweave alternative?

Several. Friends & Fables has a free plan, Questner starts with free messages and a trial, AI Dungeon describes itself as free, and Mythora is free to start with action energy that refills, plus optional purchases. Check each official site for current terms.

What is the best Everweave alternative for playing with friends?

Friends & Fables, since its official site describes parties of up to six players. Everweave's site does not describe group play, and Mythora does not offer live party play either.

Which alternative keeps the D&D feel?

Friends & Fables, with combat based on D&D 5e rules. If you mainly want a fantasy world and a character who grows, without managing rules, Mythora is worth a try.

Can I bring my Everweave character with me?

Not directly. Each product stores characters its own way. Bring the concept, the backstory and one goal they care about, then start fresh. If you are worried about long stories losing track, read why AI roleplay forgets.
